Abstract
We present a systematic numerical study of the coupled one-dimensional sine -Gordon equations for a stack of 20 Josephson junctions, with junction para meters that are representative for intrinsic Josephson junctions in Bi2SrCa 2Cu2O8. Simulations were performed for a wide range of external magnetic fi elds oriented parallel to the layers. We found a large variety of fluxon an d antifluxon modes, often involving the excitation of collective Josephson plasma oscillations or cavity resonances. Representative states are discuss ed in detail. Many dynamic configurations can be classified within a few ca tegories like the motion of fluxon rows, resonant states or off-resonant fl uxon lattices. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V.
