Abstract
Despite programmes to accelerate training in science in Mexico since the 19 70s, the indigenous science base is thin. Mexican PhD graduates were counte d in North American universities and their disciplines identified. The numb er of doctorate recipients currently recognised by the Mexican government a s national researchers was counted. The results imply that the Mexican gove rnment's efforts to strengthen scientific research are unfocussed, being ba sed on the erratic selection of institutions and disciplines of study. Brai n drain is assumed, which may he associated with the lack of ability of Mex ican institutions to absorb and use fully trained people.
