The adaptation to cave life is analysed in a monophyletic group of neo
tropical crickets, the Amphiacustae, in reference to their phylogeny a
nd to the evolution of their habitats. The most parsimonious scenario
shows two independent cave colonisations and one reversal toward epige
an life. Also the ancestral habitat of the Amphiacustae is characteriz
ed by leaf litter foraging (straminicoly) and hidding in cavities at g
round level during inactivity periods (= cavicoly). Cavicoly, thus def
ined may be exaptative to cave life.
