Abstract
A new approximation scheme is proposed to solve nonlinear degenerate convec tion-diffusion problems. The method is based on a relaxation scheme develop ed for degenerate parabolic problems in [W. Jager and J. Kacur, Numer. Math ., 60 (1991), pp. 407-427; M2AN Math. Model. Numer. Anal., 29 (1995), pp. 6 05-627], and on the method of characteristics [ J. Douglas and T. I. Russel l, SIAM J. Numer. Anal., 19 (1982), pp. 871-885], [O. Pironneau, Numer. Mat h., 38 (1982), pp. 309-332].
