Abstract
The paper addresses the practical problem of reducing the number of necessa ry function calls involving time consuming finite-element solutions by comb ining various evolution techniques with approximation methods based on Resp onse Surface Methodology. A new algorithm is proposed which offers signific ant improvement of performance while preserving the quality of the final re sult. Comparisons are made between the new algorithm and different standard strategies in terms of reliability, efficiency and cost.
