Abstract
Efficient functional derivative formulas suitable for optimal discretizatio n based refinement criteria are developed for 3-D adaptive finite element a nalysis (FEA) with vector tetrahedra. Results for generalized vector Helmho ltz systems are derived directly from first principles, and confirmed numer ically through fundamental benchmark evaluations. Practical adaption applic ations are illustrated for selected FEA refinement models.
