In this paper, the machine-cell grouping problem is considered with the obj
ective of minimising the total moves and minimising the cell load variation
. We first review the literature on machine-cell grouping involving meta-he
uristics. Then we integrate the most Powerful non-traditional algorithms, g
enetic algorithm (GA) and simulated annealing (SA) with the most robust com
puter programming language "C", for cell grouping. The computational result
s obtained by applying the genetic algorithm and simulated annealing are co
mpared for their efficiency in solving the machine-cell grouping problems.
