R. Ahmad et al., Effect of four chlorophytes on larval survival, development and adult bodysize of the mosquito Aedes aegypti, J APPL PHYC, 13(4), 2001, pp. 369-374
The effect of four microalgal chlorophytes, Chlorella vulgaris, Scenedesmus
quadricauda, Chlorococcum sp. and Ankistrodesmus convolutus, on the surviv
al, larval development and adult body size of the mosquito Aedes aegypti wa
s investigated. The percentage mortality of larvae fed with C. vulgaris, Ch
lorococcum sp. or S. quadricauda after six days was 100%, 84% and 88%, resp
ectively. Delayed pupation and body size reduction of the mosquitoes fed wi
th C vulgaris, Chlorococcum sp. and S. quadricauda were observed. In contra
st, larvae fed with A. convolutus were bigger than those fed with normal in
sectory feed. The study showed that C. vulgaris, S. quadricauda and Chloroc
occum sp. have potential to be used as larvicidal agents.
