A direct test of the adhesive strength between particles (2 mum polystyrene
latex spheres) in aggregate was carried out to probe the possibility of ag
gregates being disrupted by convection flows of certain shearing rates. Opt
ical tweezers were used to manipulate individual particles or aggregates fo
r tests in the flow field. The results of our experiment are analyzed to un
derstand how shear flow affects the coagulation process. (C) 2001 Academic
