In this article the authors summarize the symptoms, incidence and effects o
n the production of the BVD-MD Complex on the basis of the Hungarian and in
ternational literature. They estimate the annual losses caused by BVD at na
tional and herd level. in Hungary the estimated losses amount almost 630 mi
llion HUF/year. In a dairy cattle farm keeping 1000 dairy cows acute clinic
al BVD causes more than 28 million HUF estimated loss on average and becaus
e of chronic BVD-MD Complex the losses come closer to IL million HUF/year.
The presented losses probably are underestimated, because some disease effe
cts are difficult to quantificate. Summary report of losses caused by the d
isease indicates the net income realizable in case of freedom from the dise
ase and can be the starting point of cost-benefit analysis of eradication p
rograms.
