Abstract
Cracks are known to form easily along certain crystallographic directions, presumably because of weaker bonds or lower coordination numbers along thos e directions. We uncover the manner in which such weak bonds break as the t emperature is raised, by evaluating the partition function of an anisotropi c grid in two dimensions of atoms with nearest-neighbor bonds.
