The dynamics of the rigid rotor in an intense laser field is investiga
ted. It is shown that the short-time evolution of the occupation proba
bilities of the stationary states can be described by a simple analyti
cal formula. The formula is tested by a numerical simulation of the ti
me evolution of a rigid molecule.
