Abstract
Classic hydrodynamic wetting theory leads to an (approximately) linear rela tionship between capillary force and spreading speed. When substrate/liquid interfacial tension, gamma (SL), varies during spreading, due to reactivit y, molecular relaxation or the diffusion of contaminants, behaviour can be considerably modified. If gamma (SL) increases with time, drop shrinking (a nd/or spontaneous motion) may be expected.
