Alkali metals (Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs) were inserted into NASICON-type niobium(I
V)-niobium(V) orthophosphate Nb-2(PO4)(3). Substituted orthophosphates of t
he series MxNb1+x4+Nb1-x5+(PO4)(3) (M = Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs) and the host com
pound Nb-2(PO4)(3) were synthesized in open systems of condensed phosphoric
acids. The orthophosphates were characterized by IR spectroscopy and X-ray
diffraction, and the effect of the ionic radius of the alkali metal on the
unit cell volume was analyzed.
