Magnetic dipole bands have been identified in Gd-142,Gd-143,Gd-144 and Eu-1
41. nuclei. The observed bands are based on configurations with small oblat
e deformation involving high-Omega, h(11/2) proton particles and low-Omega,
h(11/2) neutron holes. Information about the strength of the effective int
eraction between the constituent nucleons has been deduced using a semiclas
sical scheme of the coupling of two angular momentum vectors. The experimen
tal results are compared with predictions of tilted axis cranking calculati
ons. The transition from irregular dipole band in Gd-144 to more regular on
es in lighter Gd nuclei is observed.
