The Adour River, on the Atlantic coast in SW France with a watershed of 17,
000 km(2), holds populations of 6 amphihaline migratory species (Atlantic s
almon, sea trout, eel, two shads and sea lamprey) exploited by commercial a
nd sport fisheries. In the early '80s, all these populations were more or l
ess declining. Various actions (habitat improvement, population studies, st
ocking, fishing regulations) were undertaken during the last two decades fo
r their enhancement, with the financial support of regional, state and Euro
pean administrations and regional water agency, and with the participation
of fishermen gathered within MIGRADOUR, supported technically by the CSR Th
is communication presents the status of the different species according to
the following plan : status before 1980, actions undertaken between 1980 an
d 1998 and evaluation of results, current orientation.
