Abstract
The inclusive pion double charge exchange on nuclei is considered with in the Gribov-Glauber approach. It is shown that inelastic rescatterin gs associated with the production of two (and more) pions in the inter mediate state make an important contribution to double charge exchange at kinetic energies above some 0.5 GeV. This mechanism dominates at e nergies higher than 1 GeV and makes it possible to explain the weak en ergy dependence of the double-charge-exchange cross section observed e xperimentally.
