Nonlinear optical (NLO) polymers with high glass transition temperatures we
re prepared by polymer analogous reaction of methyl vinylisocyanate copolym
ers, with hydroxyalkyl-functionalised chromophores which results into ureth
ane linkages between the chromophore and the polymer backbone. The precurso
r polymers show an alternating structure and glass transition temperatures
from 211 degrees to 247 degreesC were obtained.
Poled films of the polymers were characterised by second-harmonic generatio
n measurements. Stability of the NLO effect of 85% can be obtained at eleva
ted temperatures. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
