This article attempts to reconstruct the career of the royal chamberlain Pi
erre de la Borce and aristocratic perceptions of his power in the court of
king Philip III. Numerous sources permit an exploration of Pierre's relatio
ns with the nobility as well as the causes of his fall from power. These in
clude chronicles, poems, and, especially, the chamberlain's personal archiv
e, now in the National Archives.
