Widely divergent and progresssively decreasing dissolution rates were
observed in three commercial brands of nalidixic acid tablets. The agi
ng effect on the dissolution rate was unrelated to the disintegration
times of the tablets. Inclusion of modified carboxy methyl cellulose (
Nymcel(R)) in fabricated tablets yielded superior dissolution performa
nce which was unaffected even after storage at ambient temperature for
four years. Thus the aging effect of nalidixic acid tablets could be
overcome by the inclusion of super disintegrants like Nymcels in the t
ablets.
