Abstract
Theodore M. Matson contributed greatly to the traveling public through the advancement of traffic engineering and through the training of professional s. Ted was the Director of the Bureau of Highway Traffic at Yale University and was serving as Vice President of the Institute of Transportation Engin eers when his untimely death occurred in December 1954. Ted was one of the founders of the Institute. The Theodore M. Matson Award, in recognition of outstanding contributions in the field of traffic engineering, has been awa rded annually since 1957. Each year representatives from the following orga nizations select the award recipient: American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials; American Road and Transportation Builders Association; Federal Highway Administration; Institute of Transportation Engineers; Intelligent Transportation Society of America; Theodore M. Matson Associates; and Transportation Research Board.
