M. Ziaulmiraj et I. Mirza, FLUCONAZOLE FOR TREATMENT OF FUNGAL-INFECTIONS OF THE URINARY-TRACT IN CHILDREN, Pediatric surgery international, 12(5-6), 1997, pp. 414-416
Two children with fungal urinary tract infections (UTI) were treated w
ith fluconazole. One had bilateral megaureters, an almost non-function
ing right kidney, and a moderately functioning left kidney because of
severe vesicoureteric reflux. He underwent a ureteric reimplantation p
rocedure but developed a fungal UTI postoperatively. The other child h
ad bilateral refluxing megaureters, one of which appeared to open ecto
pically into the urethra. He acquired a fungal infection during intens
ive and prolonged antibiotic therapy for a bacterial UTI and septicaem
ia in the neonatal period. Both fungal infections were cured successfu
lly. We recommend fluconazole as a safe and effective antifungal agent
that may be used as a drug of choice for this difficult problem.
