Abstract
Eight dimensional symmetric composition algebras give very nice formulae fo r triality and local triality. These latter formulae will be extended to an y algebra in a suitable variety. The simple algebras in this variety will b e shown to be precisely the symmetric composition algebras over fields, whi le the prime algebras are central orders in the simple ones.
