Explicit formulas have been found for the effective piezoelectric coefficie
nts of a 0-3 composite of ferroelectric spherical particles in a ferroelect
ric matrix. Tensile loading and hydrostatic loading conditions were studied
. Assuming that both phases are dielectrically and elastically isotropic, e
xplicit expressions in simple closed form for the effective d(33), d(31) an
d d(h) coefficients were derived in terms of the constituents' piezoelectri
c coefficients and the dielectric and elastic properties of the composite a
nd constituents. Prediction of the piezoelectric coefficients for specific
composite systems was compared with experimental values from published work
s, and good agreement with data was obtained. Goodness of fit is not limite
d to low volume fraction of inclusions. (C) 2001 American Institute of Phys
