To facilitate the design of a thermally stable perpendicular magnetic recor
ding read/write system, we have developed a simple method of estimating the
rmal decay characteristics from only a small amount of information about th
e head/media and R/W conditions. The thermal decay of written pattern is es
timated based on three factors: demagnetization field, history of magnetiza
tion reversal and distribution of K-u V/k(0) T. We verify its accuracy by u
