Differential cross sections for the inelastic scattering of 88.03 keV photo
ns have been measured at an angle of 131 degrees for 21 elements with 4 les
s than or equal to Z less than or equal to 83. The measurements were perfor
med under vacuum using a Cd-109 radioisotope as a photon source and a plana
r HPGe detector. The product of intensity of the 88.03 keV incident photons
, detector efficiency and other geometrical factors were determined by meas
uring the K x-ray yields from targets of different elements and from knowle
dge of the respective fluorescence cross sections. The measured inelastic s
cattering cross sections have been compared with those calculated using the
relativistic Klein-Nishina cross section and the nonrelativistic Hartree-F
ock incoherent scattering functions. The measured cross sections are found
to be in good agreement with the calculated values for all the elements und
er investigation except for Gd (B-K = 50.239 keV), Dy (B-K = 53.788 keV), H
o (B-K = 55.618 keV), and Tm (B-K = 59.390 keV), where these values are low
er by similar to 20%, but for Bi (B-K = 90.526 keV), it is higher by 16%; B
-K is the K-shell binding energy of the element.
