Abstract
The principles of amputee rehabilitation, from preamputation to reintegrati on into the work force and community, are reviewed. The authors discuss exe rcise techniques, training programs, and environmental modifications that h ave been found to be helpful in the rehabilitation of the amputee. The exer cise programs presented here are divided into four main components: flexibi lity, muscle strength, cardiovascular training, and balance and gait. The p rograms include interventions by the physical, occupational, and recreation al therapist under the supervision and guidance of a physician.
