The principles of amputee rehabilitation, from preamputation to reintegrati
on into the work force and community, are reviewed. The authors discuss exe
rcise techniques, training programs, and environmental modifications that h
ave been found to be helpful in the rehabilitation of the amputee. The exer
cise programs presented here are divided into four main components: flexibi
lity, muscle strength, cardiovascular training, and balance and gait. The p
rograms include interventions by the physical, occupational, and recreation
al therapist under the supervision and guidance of a physician.
