The excited state nonlinearity and optical limiting behaviors of cubane-lik
e shaped clusters [WSe4(MPPh3)(3)Cl (M = Ag, Cu)] in DMF solution were stud
ied by using a picosecond laser pulses. The excited state absorption capabi
lity of clusters [WSe4(AgPPh3)(3)Cl] is obviously stronger than that of clu
sters [WSe4(CuPPh3)(3)Cl]. Influences of skeletal atoms on excited state ab
sorption are significant. The fluence-dependent model was used to describe
the optical limiting phenomena, and the ratio of absorption cross-section o
f the excited state to that of the ground state of clusters [WSe4(AgPPh3)(3
)Cl] is two times greater than that of fullerene. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science
