Abstract
Recent results and extensive background information on a number of heavy-fe rmion compounds serve to illustrate the phenomena and concepts involved. Th e large mass enhancement common to these materials is seen to signal the im portance of strong correlation, which, more often than not, leads to a depa rture from the Fermi-liquid state. The resulting 'non-Fermi liquids' await full characterization and a proper name.
