We report on the first observation of strongly damped phonon-polariton beat
s and picosecond carrier relaxation dynamics of La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 near the m
etal-insulator phase transition. The observed 60 GHz coherent oscillations
show clear softening as the temperature approaches T-C and persist well int
o the ferromagnetic-metallic state. The characteristic energy and the fast
decay component of the transient reflectivity signal near T-C is directly r
elated to the Jahn-Teller distortions.
