Abstract
The capability of the spin- and particle-number-projected generator coordin ate method (PGCM) is studied on the basis of the single-j shell model with monopole-pairing plus quadrupole-quadrupole interaction. The PGCM generates ground and excited states which attain an excellent agreement with the exa ct solutions of the shell model. It is also found that the projections of s pin and particle number drive the system toward large triaxial shapes, irre spective of the shell fillings.
