Abstract
The synthesis of Vioxx (R) (Rofecoxib, MK 966, 4-(4'methylsulfonylphenyl)-3 -phenyl-2(5H)-furanone), a newly FDA approved inhibitor of cyclooxygenase-2 , is described.
