This paper summarises the comprehensive approach to tackling the problems o
f poor neighbourhoods developed by the British government's Social Exclusio
n Unit (SEU). It analyses neighbourhood decline and why it has occurred, an
d describes the SEU's National Strategy for Neighbourhood Renewal, which is
focused on improving public services in England, building inclusive partne
rships locally that focus on community needs and using new data to target h
elp where it is most needed. It shows how the strategy is based on proven i
nitiatives and underpinned with significant new funding.
