ECTOPIC THYROID MALIGNANCY IN THE RIGHT VENTRICLE OF THE HEART

In a 55-year-old woman (10 years after subtotal thyroidectomy for foll icular adenoma) echocardiography revealed a 25 x 23-mm tumour in the r ight ventricular outflow tract. The successfully removed tumour appear ed to be a follicular carcinoma. Subsequently, there has been no clini cal and laboratory evidence for another site of metastasis or ectopic thyroid. The whole body I-131 scan showed only correct radioiodine upt ake in the place of cervical residual thyroid gland. We believe this i s the first description of follicular carcinoma in cardiac ectopic thy roid. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.
