Abstract
Degradation of basement membrane and extracellular matrix is crucial for in vasion and metastasis of tumor cells. Proteolysis occurs via matrix metallo proteinases and is tightly controlled by specific endogenous proteinase inh ibitors. This review will summarize the current view on the role of matrix metallopr oteinases in tumor growth, invasion and metastasis and focus on the importa nce of matrix metalloproteinases in gastrointestinal cancer.
