The history and present state of Sugar Research Institute (SRI), which was
founded in 1949, is described. The SRI is the major research and developmen
t provider to the Australian sugar industry. The activities of the SRI incl
ude all activities in sugar manufacturing from cane harvesting to sugar ref
ining. SRI manufactures, either inhouse or under contract, a range of proce
ss control instrumentation. SRI's Analytical Services Unit undertakes analy
ses and quality control work for clients both within and from outside the A
ustralian sugar industry. Collaboration with outside researchers, especiall
y from universities, has produced many results. Recent developments in cane
separation, boiler and combustion technology, clarification, continuous ev
aporating crystallization and renewalbe energy application are described.
