Abstract
In this paper we describe experimental and numerical studies on high bit ra te, single span transmission system over a length of 160 km without amplifi ers in the link (unrepeatered). From these studies we revealed that the tol erance of the residual dispersion is very restrictive. Proper dispersion ma nagement and PMD compensation techniques are important topics in these and future systems.
