The similarities and differences between diffraction gratings in monochroma
tors and compact discs (CD) are described by means electron microscopy (SEM
) and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS). The diffraction grating a
nd CD surfaces consist of aluminum and silver or aluminum, respectively. Th
e recording track measurement provides an understanding of behavior of CD a
s a diffraction grating. The separation of grooves in diffraction grating a
nd CD is 0.8 and 1.6 mum respectively.
