Abstract
This paper reconsiders how the availability of physicians affects mortality rates within geographic areas. Studies typically rnd that mortality rates are lower in areas with greater medical care resources. While currently ava ilable care is important, this paper shows that young adult mortality rates are influenced by physician availability during childhood as well. Studies that examine that link between medical care resources and mortality should consider the availability of care over the lifetime.
