The structural diversity of 1:1 addition products between sulfur and seleni
um donor molecules and dihalogens and interhalogens has become of particula
r interest during the last 10 years, with a wealth of structural publicatio
ns debating the factors that determine the precise structural motif of a gi
ven system. In this article, we review the main crystallographic reports, d
iscuss the structural factors affecting these systems and describe some pot
ential applications for the future. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All righ
