Abstract
To support widespread market adoption of broadband cable services, the majo r cable system companies, Multiple System Operators (MSOs), joined together to overcome specific market challenges. A key challenge was to develop a s tandard method of implementing high-speed data services across the cable in dustry. A standard technical specification would encourage many manufacture rs to develop standard subscriber and headend products. To effect this, the cable industry created its own technical specification called the Data Ove r Cable Service Interface Specification (DOCSIS). CableLabs, a research and development group for the cable industry, administers the standard and ens ures interoperability among vendors and equipment types.
