In positron emission tomography, uncertainties in-or lack of knowledge of-d
epths of interaction lead to errors in the assignment of position of coinci
dence events. This paper examines analytically the dependence of these erro
rs on depth of interaction. Here derived are expressions that relate rebinn
ing errors to the uncertainties in the measurement of interaction positions
including depth of interaction. The results confirm the intuitive notion t
hat rebinning errors are minimized when depth of interaction is measured at
least as well as the transverse position.
