P. Bobal et Da. Lightner, An inexpensive, selective procedure for oxidizing alpha-methyl to alpha-formyl pyrroles, J HETERO CH, 38(5), 2001, pp. 1219-1221
a-Methylpyrroles are converted to alpha -formyl by sodium bromate in aqueou
s methanol in similar to 60% yield. Adding 1% ceric ammonium nitrate as a c
o-oxidant brings the isolated yields of synthetically useful 2-formylpyrrol
es 2a-d up to similar to 70%, or close to those found when using only the c
onsiderably more expensive ceric ammonium nitrate as oxidant.
