This paper describes the rationale used by the Royal Automobile Club (RAC)
Motoring Services to update and improve the location and communication syst
ems used by their breakdown service. It discusses the needs and problems of
locating customers, and of locating, controlling, and communicating with p
atrols; the new systems adopted to meet these needs are described. Future r
equirements are also discussed together with new technologies that are expe
cted to become available.
