One of the extended mythical narratives of Dionysius Scytobrachion--today k
nown as the 'Libyan Stories'--contains curious tales concerning 'Atlantioi'
. An investigation of the literary origins of this people reveals that Dion
ysius has used materials from Herodotus (Book IV), Plato (the Atlantis Stor
y) and (probably) the historian Theopompus (the Meropis excursus in Philipp
ica VIII), extensively rearranging these materials to produce a new (and in
some aspects, rather surprising) whole.
