The dating of Nonius Marcellus

The date of Nonius Marcellus' De Compendiosa doctrina cannot be determined precisely from internal or external evidence. A recent attempt to prove a d ate of about AD 200 on the evidence of Nonius' literary sources does not ho ld water. Nonius' own language, the words he records as contemporary and th e physical nature of his sources (both rolls and codices) rather suggest a date of about AD 400.
