Abstract
A cultic complex uncovered at Roman Gorsium has been thought to include the provincial altar and temple, identified on the latest view with a tetrasty le structure at the south-east end of the area sacra. Re-examinations of th e epigraphical and archaeological evidence in light of the overall developm ent of western ruler cult now suggests that the site was not the headquarte rs of the provincial cult of Lower Pannonia but rather an importan center f or the worship of oriental dieties, Dolichenus in particular.
