Abstract
We study the propagation of an impulse through a finite chain of N elastic beads in which the grain diameters progressively shrink by a factor q. We s how that it should be possible to construct "tapered" chains that can effec tively thermalize shock waves. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights re served.
