It was shown by transmission electron microscopy that precipitates of a car
bon-based metastable phase coherently bound with the matrix are present in
grade VT1-0 titanium. In a temperature range of 300-550 degreesC, in bendin
g tests using a three-point scheme, the Gorsky effect for carbon is observe
d, which is revealed in the reversible creep deformation. A technique is su
bstantiated that permits one to determine the coefficient of diffusion of i
nterstitial impurities that cause the Gorsky effect. Using this technique,
effective coefficients of carbon diffusion in a temperature range of 300-55
0 degreesC were determined in VT1-0 titanium samples with various grain siz
es. It is shown that in the fine-grained state (grain size of about 0.3 mum
). the main mechanism of carbon diffusion is grain-boundary diffusion. Acti
vation energies are determined for grain-boundary and bulk diffusion of car
bon (103 and 177 kJ/mol, respectively).
