Abstract
Guard cell protoplasts isolated from Vicia leaves showed a strong suppressi on of the photosynthesis under hypotonic conditions, as reflected by change s in the chlorophyll fluorescence characteristics. The response was reversi ble as well. Mesophyll cell protoplasts did not show any lowering of photos ynthetic activity under hypo-osmotic conditions. This result indicates that the response was guard cell specific.
